Quilting is an art form steeped in tradition, but it also offers wonderful scope for creative expression. Whether you change up the fabrics in a classic design, as Nicki Trench has done so effectively in the vibrant log cabin quilt that features on our cover, or take tried and tested techniques such as foundation paper-piecing and use them to devise your own patterns (check out Elizabeth Dackson’s stunning Tiger Beat cushion for inspiration) the opportunities are endless – and so exciting
This issue of Pretty Patches is packed with adaptable projects that are simple to follow and easy to make your own, should you wish. Kelly Biscopink’s striking Must Stash quilt is built up from scraps (some 72 of them, in fact!) giving you the scope to get creative with those much-loved leftovers; Debbie von Grabler-Crozier’s on-trend buffalo check bed runner has a contemporary palette of mustard and grey, but will work equally well in bold brights (I’m thinking ahead to a burnt orange or deep red version for autumn); and Tacha Bruecher’s appliqué tote bag features a Dresden flower that could be adapted across an array of makes, from simple accessories to full-size quilts.
We also talk to two inspirational textile artists in this issue: Stephanie Redfern, whose mixed-media works interpret nature’s forms with stunning effect (look no further than the bold stylised apples in the piece shown here to see just what I mean) and Deborah O’Hare, who offers inspiration and tips for creating small quilts with big impact.
Happy stitching!
